You press the power button… nothing happens. No image, no sound, maybe just a blinking light. If your flat-screen TV won’t turn on, it can be frustrating, especially when you’re trying to relax, stream, or enjoy a football match.
But don’t rush to replace your TV. At Imperial Technologies, we’ve repaired hundreds of TVs across Trinidad. Most issues can be fixed faster and cheaper than buying a new set.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common reasons your TV may not be turning on and what you can do about it.
Common Reasons a TV Won’t Power On
1. Power Supply Failure
One of the most common problems in both LED and LCD TVs is a faulty internal power board. These boards regulate the electricity inside the TV and when they fail, the screen stays black.
Signs:
No power light
TV turns off seconds after starting
Burnt smell or clicking sound
2. Backlight Issues (You Hear Sound But No Picture)
If you turn the TV on and can hear sound but the screen remains black, chances are your LED backlights are blown or disconnected.
Signs:
TV turns on with sound but no image
Flashlight test reveals a faint picture
Screen randomly dims or flickers before going black
3. Standby Light Blinks Repeatedly
Some TVs have error codes built into the blinking standby light. If your power LED blinks (e.g., 5 or 6 times), it may signal a specific issue like a failed capacitor or motherboard short.
Example:
5 blinks = Main board failure
6 blinks = Backlight or inverter issue
4. Faulty Power Button or Remote Sensor
Sometimes the issue is as simple as the TV’s power button not working or the remote sensor being damaged.
Signs:
TV only powers on occasionally
You can’t turn it on from either the remote or the TV panel
IR receiver not lighting up or responding
5. Surge Damage or Burnt Components
In Trinidad, voltage surges and power cuts can fry internal TV components, especially if you’re not using a surge protector.
Signs:
TV was working before a storm or outage
No response at all
Smell of burnt plastic
